Scania

A surprise Scania, spotted off Caldwell Road in Eastern Passage December 12. This one looks quite new, and doesn't appear to be one of the New Brunswick fleet covered here before.

I didn't hang around long enough to see if it had a rear licence plate, so it remains a mystery.

Typical European fit out, it had arrays of driving lights and a pair of Michelin men on the top light bar.

New Merc

Mercedes trucks are always interesting to see as they are rare birds in North America. Daimler builds and sells trucks on this side of the Atlantic under the Freightliner, Western Star, (and Thomas Built buses) banners, but the company only sells cars and Sprinter vans with the Mercedes name in Canada and the USA.

Re-builders like big Mercedes trucks however so the chassis or even finished trucks are sometimes imported. I have previously posted photos of the Øverassen airport runway sweepers from Norway, with their unique power trailer arrangement. Several of these arrived in Halifax by ship in October.

These ones were bound for Calgary.

This week's arrival was a single cab unit, which appeared to be fitted for plowing or sweeping. It has extra headlights mounted on a frame just below the windshield. It was also an Øverassen rebuild, and had a Norwegian flag sticker on the side of the cab. It left town with a Volvo, but I was not quick enough to get details of the hauler.

If there was a trailer to go with this rig - I missed it.

Tandem Straits

I have always liked tandem axle strait trucks, so am sure to grab a photo no matter how many "round the blocks" I have to make to catch up with one. My catch today was made somewhat simplier as I guessed where the truck was headed and managed to get there in time.

The Peterbilt day cab with a low rise van body is operated by Darling International Canada Inc. The truck picks up waste from grocery stores and other establishments and transports it to recycling centres. Darling, based in Texas, was primarily a renderling company, but has branched out to recycle and repurpose materials for a multitude of uses. In 2013 Darling Ingredients acquired Rothsay, which it rebranded as Darling 2022.

I found the truck at my local grocery store, as I had guessed, where it was about to take on cargo from company owned sealed containers. I assume the truck is based at the former Rothsay facility in Truro, NS.
