KW hauls a boiler

Just about anything that can be moved moves on a truck. Bulky machinery, such as boilers, are often built to dimensions suitable for trucking. Such is the case for this unit, which I saw heading from the port today. A quick internet search revealed that TK-Topboilers are spevcailists in building boilers for greenhouses, and are based in South Holland, between The Hague and Rotterdam.

I had less success in finding out anything about the operator of the orange Kenworth. I note a Quebec plate in front, and what appears to be "S-T Express" on the side. The truck is heading into snow country, and I wonder how much ice will build up between the fender and drop deck.

More Imports

Even though winter will soon be upon us, the imports keep rolling in (and out to westward destinations.)

Unlike last week's unit, I caught this Liebherr today before the riggers had boarded over the windows for its rail trip. (It only has six axles, whereas last week's had seven.)

This New Holland FX40 forage harvester and another tractor were getting a first class ride from Fairview.

Mikel Roy Giles from Brampton , ON used this long Peterbilt with Canada 150 insignia, to do the hauling.

Navistar and Daimler - head to head

In the very competitive medium duty truck field Navistar International is putting up a good fight against Daimler Freightliner for market share - even if the photo shows them tail to tail.

International has the MV model (Medium Vocational) such as this sweeper operated by the Dexter Municipal Group glides past a Freightliner (likely an M2 106 model) with dump body.

With day cab, extended cab and crew cab options, both companies cater to a wide range of needs.
(The Johnston sweeper company is part of the Swiss Bucher company, which also builds suction trucks, garbage trucks and snow clearing equipment.)

International and Freightliner also compete for school bus cab/ chassis business. I spotted this odd Blue Bird today, with what appears to be an International hood. (It carries a Blue Bird plaque on the side of the hood.)

Blue Bird remains an independent company, trading on the NASDAQ exchange.

Liebherr - heading west

Now secured on a flat car and ready to head west (that is the only direction you can go from Halifax!) this big Liebherr is all painted in company colours but with no name painted on yet.

The cabin glass has been covered against transit damage and a plywood "Do Not Hump" sign has been added to warn rail workers that this is a delicate cargo.

Peterbilt big load

The specialist carrier Equipement St-Germain of Ste-Julie, QC sent there heavy load carrier Peterbilt to Halifax to haul away a giant drill rig.

The drill rig is a Bauer BG36H that can drill a 2500mm diameter hole to 68 meters or more depth. There appear to be at least two more loads to make up the complete rig - the rest of the huge tower and the BS95 crawler tracks. The unit was built in Germany and arrived in Halifax by ship.

It is unusual to see a heavy load truck with only a day cab, but with that double dolly trailer I guess they are trying to keep the overall length down to a 75 foot maximum.

KW from MB- amended

Lots of long haul trucks make their way to Halifax, but they usually don't stay long enough for a photo. This Kenworth from Manitoba was an exception this morning.

Running for Jiffy Express Inc of Winnipeg it is hauling an unusual curtain side trailer. Common in Europe, these trailers are gradually becoming more popular in this country due to the ease of side loading and unloading with a forklift. Barely visible in the photo is the "man door" fitted in the forward bulkhead of the trailer.

The trailer once belonged to Integrity Express Shipping of Concord, ON but that company's logo and serial number have been removed and another number painted on.

Amendment

Later in the day I caught up with the truck again as it was in process of "swallowing" a container. The trailer is not a typical hard top / curtain side as I originally thought, but a cross between an accordion and a pelican!

Shining Star

A bright and shiny Western Star turned up today at the Fairview Cove terminal.

Oversize loads such as this are usually imports to Halifax, arriving by ship, but this one is an export. Since I have got into trouble with this company before by identifying loads - yes they actually threatened to sue me! - I will leave this one's operator, shipper and destination a mystery.

(They still have nice trucks.)

Sharp Kenworth

Sharp Transportation Systems of Cambridge, ON, sent this sharp Kenworth to fetch a container that was likely diverted from Montreal due to a longshoremen's strike,

Nice retro look.

Shiny Liner

This shiny Freightliner showed up today at Fairview in time for an inbound shipment from Europe.

The rig is running for Transport LDC Inc:

Cranes for contrast

I don't recall ever seeing a Shuttlelift Carrydeck crane  before today's find. A little research reveals that it is a Manitowoc brand name, offering a range of small mobile cranes: https://manitowoccranes.com/en/cranes/shuttlelift-carrydeck/shuttlelift-products/shuttlelift-carrydeck with cargo deck. This one appears to be the CD3330F model with a 8.5 ton(US) capacity boom and a 14,000 lbs deck capacity.

I couldn't get nearer due to the puddle in the foreground. A slightly larger puddle in the background, called Halifax Harbour, separates this little unit from a lift boat in the far background with a 1500 tonne capacity crane. An interesting contrast.

Famous Truck hits Halifax

You Tube star Sergei Dratchev and his famous Kenworth 305 touched down in Halifax today. The heavy hauler has built quite a following for his in depth You Tube posts. Nice truck too.

Based in Cambridge, ON Sergei has his own You Tube channel:  https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCBPUpF6S1LFdKi3ZIve60gA

Also at Fairview Cove today was another aircraft fuselage. Total Transport + Rigging hauled the trailer out of the terminal using a big Navistar.

Addendum

Also on site was this Liebherr. I'm not sure how this will be configured when it is ready to go on the road. Seems a bit high, but if the boom is lowered it will be too big an overhang at the end.

Not to be outdone, Atlantic Tiltload showed up a bit later to take over a couple oversize crates.

Lucky Catch

It helps to have keen eyesight - not to mention luck - so that you can get into the right position to grab a photo on the fly. All that happened this morning at the Fairview Cove terminal when I spied an odd truck emerging without a trailer., but

Turns out to be a wrecker from Lindsay Milne's Roadside Assistance from Kentville, Nova Scotia. I have no idea what brought the big Pete in to Halifax, but I am glad I got the picture.

Seeing Stars

There seem to be a lot of Western Stars on the road these days, and that's a good thing! They are particularly plentiful around the Fairview Cove container terminal where a lot of interesting RoRo and heavy cargo comes in from Europe.

This small Liebherr crane was recently arrived from Europe and was in transit by Total Transport/ Mills'  Western Star and well used four axle trailer.

Working across the street Atlantic Tiltload had this Star on hand to move a portable building to make more parking room for idled buses.

Equipment Express of Ayr, ON had a shrink wrapped boiler to move. The company must have several similar trucks. This one is number 311, and I saw 320 here  week or so ago.

On close inspection I realized that I got Armour, Sunbury and Midland trucks in the same picture, although in the background. I don't know who runs the Cat powered Peterbilt.

Right Hand Drives

It is unusual to see a right hand drive vehicle, but to see two of them within minutes is indeed a rare occurrence.

First up was this cute little street sweeper. Much smaller than the usual rig, it must be used for pathways and trails or other roadways that are too narrow for the bigger units.

The RAVO is a Dutch manufacturer, part of the Fayat Group, a French company. Very well known in Europe, they are fairly recent arrivals in this country. The RHD configuration allows the driver to cosy up to curbs where most of the road grit accumulates over the winter months.

Somewhat larger in scale is this well used European Volvo that I discovered driving around near the Fairview Cove terminal, so perhaps it had recently arrived from Europe. it didn't appear to have local plates or permits.

The rig was also equipped with an unusual looking Multlift body.

The plates it did carry were "SF 53 WFD" .
