More Oversize

More oversize loads continue to arrive in Halifax by ship. They are usually on the road within a very few hours, so I probably miss most of them. However this evening I did catch a couple:

Riggers were still at work completing the chains to secure this unit from Superior Boiler. It will be hauled away by this colorful F'Liner from ASET (Alberta Specialize Equipment Transport) from Carstairs, AB.

Meanwhile:

A low rise Volvo from IMT International Machine Transport from Abbotsford, BC loaded this big crate. IMT specializes in aerospace component transport as well as oversize and heavy. The crate displays Rolls Royce markings and a weight of 34,150 kg.

Moodie's ups the ante

Moodie's Crane Rentals is one of the three main crane operators in Nova Scotia, along with Irving Equipment Ltd and A.W.Leil  Cranes and Equipment Ltd (a Seafort Capital partner company). Moddie's has offices in Halifax (Burnside) and Pictou. What may be its largest crane recently posed for a photo op on the waterfront.

It is a Grove ( by Manitowoc) GMK 5250L,  which is a 5 axle, 250 tonne capacity unit with a 110 ft reach. It is also equipped with a three axle dolly to comply with Nova Scotia road weight regulations.

Grove brochures show the boom nested over the cab (where the roof is depressed) however that would place too much weight on the axles so the dolly is used to distribute the load.

Kenworth hauls a pig

We don't see livestock hauled by truck very much in my area, so perhaps this load will be a close as I come.

T-Lane Nation is an Edmonton, AB based carrier with offices across the country from Saint John, NB, to Mission, BC. This beefy Kenworth is typical of the trucks they run.

The KW is hauling a big Aspen trailer with dollies front and rear and the payload is a container carrying a pipeline inspection tool called a "pig". These torpedo like units can be equipped with cameras or x-ray devices to investigate and record the condition of some types of pipelines. The container presumably contains the pig and all the control equipment required to operate it.

Quest Integrity is an inspection company based in Seattle and is noted for pigging technology. The schematic on the door of the container implies they work world wide. It features a cutaway drawing of a pipe complete with pig.

New Sandviks

The Swedish conglomerate Sandvik is one of the world's largest manufacturers of mining machinery. Among their many lines are numerous trucks and loaders for use in underground mining. They are usually identifiable by their low profile, to fit the restricted overheads of mining tunnels. A trio of units arrived by ship in Halifax recently and have now been loaded on rail cars for delivery to end users.

Two of the units are TH545i articulated dump trucks. These rigs have a 45 tonne payload capacity in their 22 cubic meter dump box, and are powered by a 6 cylinder Volvo of 603 bhp.

The third unit is a Toro underground loader with a 17 tonne capacity.

It is available with buckets ranging in size from 7 to 9.1 cubic meters. There was no indication that I could see as to which this was. It is also powered with a Volvo engine, this one generating 310 kW.
