The Swedish conglomerate Sandvik is one of the world's largest manufacturers of mining machinery. Among their many lines are numerous trucks and loaders for use in underground mining. They are usually identifiable by their low profile, to fit the restricted overheads of mining tunnels. A trio of units arrived by ship in Halifax recently and have now been loaded on rail cars for delivery to end users.
Two of the units are TH545i articulated dump trucks. These rigs have a 45 tonne payload capacity in their 22 cubic meter dump box, and are powered by a 6 cylinder Volvo of 603 bhp.
The third unit is a Toro underground loader with a 17 tonne capacity.
It is available with buckets ranging in size from 7 to 9.1 cubic meters. There was no indication that I could see as to which this was. It is also powered with a Volvo engine, this one generating 310 kW.
