GK Services

GK Services runs this delivery van built on an International Workhorse strip chassis. No idea who the van builder is - they are too modest to display their name.

Sharp trucks

1. Mills Heavy Hauling had this sharp Western Star on the waterfront this morning to pick up a float trailer. This truck has appeared on Truckfax before, but from the passenger side.

2. G.K.Morse & Sons Trucking Ltd of Centreville, NS, has always operated good looking trucks. This Freightliner is no exception, especially when it has the very sharp aluminum B-train trailer.
These large steel rings, used in windmill manufacturing, are a regular cargo arriving through the port of Halifax, and are usually carried on single trailers.

More Movers

1. Head to head movers.

2. Freightliner's extended cab (with Babcock body.)

3. International's version (with US Body Co van- a former US truck.)

How to cram several beefy movers into a truck cab? The short extended cab (as opposed to the longer four door crew cab) allows for half a dozen lumpers - packed in, sardine fashion - but doesn't take too much away from payload space.

These are definitely not intended for long distance transportation of people, but they do the job around town and for short moves.

Freightliner and Navistar International seem to have a pretty good lock on these factory extended cabs, as I could see this morning. And of course the cargo box builders can configure a van body around any size or shape of cab to squeeze the maximum cube onto the wheelbase.

AMJ Campbell is a very large Canadian moving outfit, and Premier Executive Suites / Premiere Van Lines was founded by one of Campbell's owners.

More Mining Trams [updated]

1. Atlas Copco 5020 [added 2011-03-12]

It was also mining tram day at Fairview this morning. Two competing brands of underground mining trucks were lined up in the parking lot.

2. A pair of these Sandvik 30SX (30 metric tonne) trucks showed up on Atlantic Tiltload trailers. These did not look like new trucks, but they did appear to be in good shape. My guess is they are outbound vehicles, heading overseas.

3. A mighty Atlas Copco 5020 (50 tonne) articulated, all wheel drive tram. This is an inbound unit. No sign of its low profile dump box however, so perhaps it had already left. No tractor on this trailer, so destination is unknown.

I recently uploaded another Atlas Copco unit, see:

Big Rigs for Big Boxes

1. Very big Freightliner leads this overwide crate. The fenders are not black, but a deep red.

2. A classis Kenworth carries the other crate. It appears to have just been loaded on, so the "D" banners have not been hung on the bumpers yet.

Not to be outdone in the special commodities business, the Fastrax division of Day & Ross put these two rigs on the job to carry two oversize crates from the Fairview Cove terminal. Both trucks are well equipped with extra gear, and big power to haul the cargo.

The crates are from Andritz, an Austrian based company, that provides industrial plant systems for hydropower, pulp and paper, metals, environmental processes and the feed and biofuel industries.
.

More Equipment Express

1. Western Star with heavy lift trailer on a trailer (the crane is on another trailer.)

2. Well traveled International, needs a little bumper help.

3. Now this is a headache rack. Lots of space for chains and rigging gear, and a tarp box.

Equipment Express of Ayr, ON is back with more stuff. I posted some of their trucks January 17: http://truckfax.blogspot.com/2011/01/more-big-loads.html

This morning I saw three more of their trucks (one was hidden, so not photographable) with a crane and some heavy lift/ multi-wheel trailers.

OPT

Time for another tribute to one of my favourite sites - Old Parked Cars. This time it's an Old Parked Truck - a Ford Ranger Custom, extended cab to be specific.

Having leased/owned a total of seven Rangers, I certainly have a soft spot for them. On this model , as with my first one, there are only two doors. In later years there have been four doors.

I never had one painted in this peculiar pea soup green however.
This may be the last year for this long running vehicle (since 1983) since Ford will be closing the factory where they are made.
