The white Faun

1. Partners Crane Rentals FAUN at pier 9 (the buildings in the background are named the Mont Blanc apartments in recognition of one of two ships that collided and blew up most of Halifax in 1917, onty a few yards away fomr this location.)

Today is white vehicle day (for some reason, everything I saw was white!)

This generously sized located truck crane at pier 9 is a FAUN (for Fahrzegfabriken Ansbach un Nurnburg) produced by Tadano FAUN , a 100% Japanese-owned manufacturer, located in Germany.

There is lots more about them on their own web site, including illustrations of all their models- be sure to see the Fan-Shop section.

My what big ears you have-all the better to see you with!

1. Mac Tours comes to Halifax 2011-03-05.

No I don't run a bus line on the side. Mac Tours Inc of Westville, NS does, however, and this is their Unit 500, a Thomas Saf-T Liner.

With coach type seating, and passenger capacity up to 90 on a variety of wheelbases, the Saf-T Liner appears to be a budget model highway coach. Fit and finish is more along the school bus lines. Thomas certainly builds a number of school bus models, and is owned by Daimler.

It's a Champion

1. Leo J. Beazley operates this International/ Walinga refuse truck.

2. Walinga Custom Cab produces the cab and segregator/ compactor body.

Better known for their trailers, Walinga also produces this line of specialist recycling trucks. This is the Walinga Champion, which allows the operator to classify trash as it is picked up. The custom cab with right drive/stand up drive is part of the package.

Walinga is based in Guelph, ON, but has several locations in Canada and the US. Everything you want to know about the Champion can be found in their brochure.

1. The assembled Lima crane (added 2011-03-06)

2.Mills Western Star with 6 axle Lima crane chassis.

3. Mills Western Star day cab, with set-back axle hauls the crane body.

4. Smaller cranes ready to lift the chassis. A Sterling boom truck stands by.

Mills Heavy Hauling and A.W.Leil cranes teamed up today to unload a big Lima crane at the Fairview Cove parking lot.

A pair of Mills Western Stars hauled the crane in on Loadstar-Paron trailers, and another pair of Leil cranes unloaded the chassis and crane. A third Leil boom truck was also on hand.

... and today a Freightliner

Almost the same place as yesterday's photo, and another moving van, with Kentucky trailer. But this time it's a Freightliner on the head end-and no moose bar-only a bug deflector. Long tanks for long trips, and a winter blanket for the rad, but otherwise a plain jane.

AMJ Campbell runs this under Atlas Van Lines license.

Do we like trucks that are left in basic factory white paint - a decided NO.

Big Pete from the Rock

Down Home Movers from Hants Harbour, Newfoundland operate this big Pete with a big Kentucky trailer, and an extra big moose bar on the sharp end.

Moose are a huge problem in Newfoundland, and moose bars have become an essential part of trucking in that province. I must say however, that this arrangement is one of the biggest I've ever seen.
This truck has also seen some heavy road miles recently judging by the over all coat of salt.

Industrial Stength Kenworth

Not your normal highway Kenworth, this boom truck has the heavy radiator and industrial type cab roof.

However it has fancier fenders than the flat plate you would expect on a vocational truck.

There must be a story behind this Alberta truck (once owned by NWP Trucking Corp, spun off in 2005 from NWP Industries, founded as Northwest Pipe & Supply) and how it ended up in Nova Scotia. (Photo 2011-02-16)
